General Dentistry FAQ's
Cosmetic Dentist serving Boulder and Denver, Colorado
I always get nervous when I have to go to the dentist. Is there something that can help me?
Many people are fearful about visiting a dentist. To help you, Dr. Schaffer practices sedation dentistry, where you are given a gentle oral sedative or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax. Dr. Schaffer, will discuss your level of anxiety to determine which method is right for you.
How are lasers used in dentistry?
Lasers are highly focused beams of light that work quietly and with minimal discomfort to a patient. Dr. Schaffer uses the Waterlase to perform many procedures such as cleaning out cavities and recontouring gum tissue. Because lasers work so quickly and with pinpoint focus, the procedures are relatively painless. If you have any questions about laser use, Dr. Schaffer will be happy to discuss the procedure with you in advance.
What is TMJ?
TMJ is an abbreviation for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, which comprises a number of symptoms that result when your jaw doesn't align properly. Misaligned jaws strain the muscles surrounding them, which can lead to pain in the face, head, arms, shoulders, or back. TMJ can cause headaches, sore teeth, numbness or tingling in the arms, popping in the jaw, chipped and broken teeth, or pain in the neck and shoulders.
TMJ can be hard to diagnose. Dr. Schaffer has years of experience and training in detecting the symptoms associated with TMJ. If you, or someone in your family, have had any of the above symptoms for a good length of time, you should schedule an evaluation with Dr. Schaffer.
How can I prevent gum disease?
The easiest and most effective way is through daily flossing and brushing. In addition, you should have your teeth examined and cleaned every six months by a hygienist. During these visits, any accumulated tartar and plaque will be removed. The hygienist will also show you the most effective way to brush and floss at home. If you have children, it's never too early to start them on the road to good preventive dental hygiene.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are replacement teeth that are actually implanted into your jaw. Eventually they fuse with your jawbone and are extremely stable. Unlike traditional crowns and bridges, they do not need support from your surrounding teeth. However, because it is a minor surgical procedure, the process takes longer than crown or bridge replacements-up to nine months depending on healing time. Implants are sometimes used to support dentures or bridges.
