A porcelain crown covers the visible area of a tooth, creating a brand new surface. Crowns are used to strengthen a decaying tooth, repair a broken tooth, or improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth.
Placing a crown generally requires two visits, unless Dr. Schaffer determines that you are a candidate for CEREC crowns. During your first visit, the tooth requiring the crown will be shaped in order to provide a strong base for the crown. You may require some topical anesthesia during this procedure, depending on the location and condition of the tooth. Dr. Schaffer will take an impression of the base and send it out to a laboratory, which will create the crown. You will be given a temporary crown to protect the tooth from damage while the permanent one is being created.
On your next visit, Dr. Schaffer will fit the crown to make sure it is in alignment with your other teeth and match it to their color. The crown will be bonded with cement and then exposed to a laser, which hardens the cement to ensure a secure fit.
If you have two or more adjacent teeth in need of repair, you may require a bridge. A bridge is a series of connected crowns that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. When bridges are fitted by an expert cosmetic dentist like Dr. Schaffer they are both comfortable and indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
